Before the Uptown...

Before the Uptown opened in 1936, this location on Ohio was formerly "The Smoke Shop" from approximately 1905 to 1935.  The Smoke Shop not only offered tobacco products, but it also added billiards and even bowling lanes in the early 1930's.  The newspaper images below give more context to the history of this space leading up to the construction of the Uptown in 1936.

Meg Liston had the rare privilege of showing the Uptown Theatre to the world-renowned French photographers Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre.  The talented artists are compiling a collection of photographs taken in old abandoned theaters in the United States.  They flew from Paris to Detroit and then to KCI and drove from Kansas City to Sedalia.
Their previous collections of work included The Ruins of Detroit, Gunkanjuima and Theatres.  They have had solo exhibitions of their works in Paris, Zurich, Stockholm, London, Berlin, Amsterdam and New York.
The artists were pleased that so much of the original art deco elements of the interior design remained.  They spent about 2 hours in the theatre and headed out to Fulton and Jefferson City for more theaters.  Yves & Romain said they would share their Uptown photos with S.D.D.I.

Thanks to the volunteers who helped clean up the Uptown on November 16 and November 23, 2013.  We filled a dumpster on Ohio with debris thanks to the following:

David Esser, Bev & Charles Gerke, Marge Harlin, Jim Hogan, Truman Kirschner, Rob, Meg, and Zack Liston, Matt Musslin, Roberta Myers, Rachel Samson, Noland Smih, Josh Rhoads, Bob Walters, Ron Yates and Dale Yelton.

They helped make the Uptown a little less cluttered for those who toured the theatre Thanksgiving night.
Thank you.

This past Tuesday, June 18, 2013, a building inspector reviewed the Uptown with SDDI members and volunteers.  No significant structural concerns were noted.   We even learned the stage floor is sound, supported by a concrete plane.
Officials from Septagon Construction are preparing a rough estimate of renovation expenses to assist SDDI in determining fund raising goals.
